Project Accountant

Lenexa, KS (Hybrid)

Job Description:

Millig Design Build is seeking an experienced construction Project Accountant in our Lenexa, KS office. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of construction job-cost accounting, excellent math and organizational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with our clients, construction and design teams, subcontractors, and suppliers.

The Project Accountant executes Millig’s project accounting functions and assists Project Managers in financial reporting, ensuring all project financials are timely and accurate, and ensuring job-cost accounting accuracy.

Anticipated compensation: $75,000 - $95,000 (plus bonuses)

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Review and determine initial project setup in system with key stakeholders

  • Collect subcontractor lien releases and other project closeout documentation

  • Receive subcontractor billings and enter bills into the accounting system. Coordinate with the construction manager to reconcile progress billings with work completed in the same period.

  • Compile and deliver directly to the customer billing packages per customer-specific requirements, including lien waivers, AIA forms, schedule of values, etc., and enter invoices into the accounting system.

  • Ensure timely follow-up and resolution of internal and external project billing and payment inquiries

  • Fill out Revenue Recognition Worksheet (project tabs)

  • Assist with month-end close and annual audit, including project-level cost analysis for revenue recognition.

  • Lead monthly project reviews with Project Managers, Construction Directors, and Business Unit V.P.’s to review the status and WIP of individual projects

  • Prepare forecasts, adjust budgets, and prepare final project analysis and closeouts.

  • Prepare revenue and cost adjustment entries with appropriate supporting information and work with the general accounting team to process them in the correct accounting period

  • Perform monthly closeout activities, including account reconciliations, G/L analysis, and journal preparation; validating entries and accruals made by our accounting group.

  • Execute non-project accounts payable (overhead expenses)

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Document accounting processes and maintain our information.

  • Deliver accurate and timely issuance of company's monthly financial results and annual audited statements.

  • Perform detailed reviews and financial analysis of all business and project costs, project capitalized costs, and accruals

  • Leverage data and other information to support Management team for business analysis and decision making

  • Perform internal year-end tax reconciliation process and distribution of timely, accurate subcontractor 1099s

  • Make deposits

  • File state and federal tax withholdings (connected to payroll)

  • File local and state sales tax payments (connected to payroll)

  • Function as day-to-day contact for payroll processing and investigate payroll related issues.

  • Understand and assist small subcontractors with government reporting requirements (e.g., WA L&I certified payroll)

  • Obtain subcontractor certificates of insurance

  • Responsible for onboarding subcontractors; developing and distributing state- and program-specific subcontractor onboarding packet (Questionnaire, I9, etc.)

  • Obtain Millig P&P bonds

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • A bachelor’s or associate degree in accounting, construction administration or a related field, and 5+ years experience.

  • Have an understanding of job-cost accounting and capable of independently performing and executing a broad array of day-to-day project accounting functions.

  • Have knowledge of construction pay application formats and processes.

  • This position is process driven and self directed, needing little direct management of their day-to-day duties.

  • Must have excellent math and organization skills and attention to detail.

  • Must be highly competent in Microsoft Excel (or Google Sheets) and have the ability to become highly proficient with Millig’s ERP/accounting solution (Premier).
