St. Louis Building Energy Awareness Ordinance

What you need to know about benchmarking your St. Louis building.

In 2017 St. Louis became the fifth city in the Midwest to pass a mandatory energy benchmarking ordinance, (Ordinance 70474).

What is St. Louis’ benchmarking ordinance?

This ordinance requires St. Louis city-owned buildings and privately-owned commercial buildings of 50,000 SF or more to record annual whole-building energy and water consumption data into ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager by April 1st each year.

Why benchmark?

Benchmarking your St. Louis building gives you a strategic approach to energy management, and enables you to learn about strategic ways to save money on energy use and reduce your greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition, the data you submit assists the City in providing energy reduction resources, training, and best practices to owners of lesser-performing buildings.

What data will I need?

Am I required to make updates to my building?

Not at the moment. The aim of this ordinance is to help you make choices about how to save money through energy efficiency.
